STEP 1: Reference material
The first photo should be taken as close to straight ahead as possible. With a few tweaks in Photoshop, it'll become the color map. The rest will help keep the displacement and specular maps accurate. Always take reference pics on a cloudy day so you don't have to edit out direct shadows from sunlight.
To create the shader, I'd suggest Cutter, Malcolm Kesson's great text editor, which is already optimized for RenderMan code. Use Cutter's RIB templates to preview your shader. You can also use Cutter as a front end interface to convert your images to RenderMan texture files (.tx).
